FAQ

Kids Classes

What sort of things should I consider when choosing a school?

When choosing a school you must decide what the purpose of enrolling your child is? Parents are looking for a school that promotes learning in a fun, safe atmosphere. A school that encourages the child growth while instilling confidence, respect, discipline, concentration, fitness and appropriate self-defense skills. Our chief instructor, Steven Hiscoe, started Jiu-Jitsu when he was 7 years old. He is a 9th degree black and has operated Hiscoe Jiu-Jitsu in the Fraser Valley since 1992. He has also been a full time police officer since 1989.

Will my 6 year old be in the same class as an 11 year old?

No, at Hiscoe Jiu-Jitsu we promote age-specific programs. This means that kids of similar age and learning aptitude are groups togehter. We have classes for 3-4, 5-6, 7-9 and 10-13 year olds. This approach has proven to be successful in helping kids reach their potential and be successful in our classes.

At Hiscoe Jiu-Jitsu we promote the benefits of training in Jiu-Jitsu; confidence, discipline, respect, teamwork, honest and integrity. Jiu-Jitsu is about protecting oneself, not displaying aggressive behaviour. We strive to have our young students apply the benefits of jiu-jitsu training to their everyday lives

My child has never done martial arts before?

No problem. At Hiscoe Jiu-Jitsu each age group has a beginner class. In this class children will learn the basics necessary for that age group. We have a set curriculum and learning objectives for each group to ensure they are learning what is required for their level.

Adults Classes

Do I have to be in good shape before I start?

No, you will get into shape as you train. There is no expectation that new students may be able to perform all exercises or drills. Students will progress at their own paces and increase intensity when they are ready. We have a series of exercises that you will learn as you progress through the ranking system which will enable you to perform the self defense techniques. The goal is to get in shape while learning new skills.

I am 31 years old, am I too old to start martial arts?

No, you are not too old to begin martial arts training. At Hiscoe Jiu-Jitsu our students range from 3 year olds to 70 year olds and all in between. We are able to adapt our teachings to all ages. Can-Ryu Jiu-Jitsu is a practical and effective martial art that does not incorporate gymnastics.
